Philippine wildlife crime-fighting champions honoured at national awards | QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Wildlife crime is fought in villages, offices, ports, courtrooms and command centres alike. The second Wildlife Sentinel Awards (Wise) reflects this, recognising the many different roles and government institutions that have helped deliver tangible results against wildlife crime in the Philippines.

The Awards, first held in 2024 and organized by wildlife conservation nonprofit TRAFFIC International, recognize individuals and government units for their exceptional work against wildlife crime in the Philippines.

“Every arrest made, every case filed, every operation carried out with integrity, these are the quiet, unglamorous acts that help ensure the survival of these precious beings. I am certain we can build a world that gives all creatures, especially our endangered species, a fighting chance,” said Quezon City Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte, in her opening address.

The 2026 nominees weren’t limited to law enforcers. They spanned the gamut of people and agencies who modernised procedures and built systems, communities and networks that scaled up crime-fighting. Their actions covered new and repeat offenders as well as terrestrial, marine and cybercrime.

These efforts were recognized under five WiSe Awards categories: Innovation, Impact, Integrity, Collaboration and Leadership. This year, 11 individuals and government units were nominated for the fight against wildlife crime, up from eight nominees in the inaugural WiSe Awards in 2024.

The following are winners for the 2026 WiSe Awards:

“Behind every arrest, wildlife rescue or seizure, is a quiet hero working behind the scenes. We salute the remarkable dedication and commitment of these countless wildlife defenders,” said Kanitha Krishnasamy, Director for TRAFFIC Southeast Asia.

This year’s winners and nominees remind us that the task ahead is not easy, sometimes fraught with risk and dangers. But we hope their stories inspire others to join this fight, to make the world safer for wildlife and people,” she added.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES | NRCE 2026: The Future of Philippine Retail Takes Center Stage This August | As PRA Celebrates 50 Years, Retail Leaders, Innovators, and Global Visionaries Gather for the Industry’s Biggest Event

The retail industry is entering one of the most transformative periods in its history.

Artificial intelligence is changing how consumers discover products. Customer expectations continue to evolve. Supply chains are becoming more interconnected and complex. Digital technologies are redefining business operations. New brands are disrupting established players, while retailers across the Philippines face a common challenge:

How do you stay relevant in a world that refuses to stand still?

For business owners, retail executives, entrepreneurs, marketers, technology providers, and decision-makers, the answers may be found at the 32nd National Retail Conference and Expo (NRCE 2026), happening on August 6–7, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center Manila.

Organized by the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), this year’s event carries special significance as the organization celebrates its 50th Anniversary, marking five decades of leadership, advocacy, and service to the Philippine retail industry.

With the theme “New. Next. Forward.”, NRCE 2026 serves as both a celebration of the industry’s achievements and a roadmap for navigating the future.

More than a conference, it is where the country’s retail leaders come together to exchange ideas, discover innovations, build partnerships, and prepare for what’s next.

A Golden Milestone for Philippine Retail

The year 2026 marks a historic milestone for the Philippine Retailers Association.

For fifty years, PRA has championed the interests of retailers, helping businesses navigate economic shifts, industry disruptions, changing consumer behavior, and emerging technologies. Through advocacy, education, networking, and industry development initiatives, PRA has played a pivotal role in shaping modern Philippine retail.

As the organization celebrates its Golden Anniversary, NRCE 2026 becomes more than an annual gathering.

It becomes a reflection of how far Philippine retail has come—and an opportunity to define where it is headed next.

At a time when businesses are adapting to rapid technological change and evolving customer expectations, PRA’s 50th year serves as a reminder that resilience, innovation, and collaboration remain the foundations of long-term growth.

Opening Keynotes from Global Retail and Supply Chain Leaders

Setting the tone for this year’s conference are two distinguished Opening Keynote Speakers whose careers have helped shape retail and commerce across Asia and beyond.

V.P. Sharma: Building One of Southeast Asia’s Retail Giants

One of the most anticipated speakers at NRCE 2026 is V.P. Sharma, Founder and Group CEO of MAP Group Indonesia.

Widely regarded as one of Asia’s most accomplished retail entrepreneurs, Sharma transformed MAP Group from a single retail operation into a regional powerhouse with thousands of locations and a portfolio of globally recognized brands.

His keynote is expected to offer invaluable lessons on leadership, customer-centricity, sustainable growth, organizational resilience, and long-term business building.

In an era often focused on short-term results, Sharma’s journey demonstrates the power of vision, discipline, and consistent execution.

Joseph Phi: Reimagining the Future of Global Commerce

Joining Sharma as a Keynote Speaker is Joseph Phi, Group CEO of Li & Fung, one of the world’s most influential supply chain and sourcing companies.

With decades of experience leading global commerce, supply chain transformation, and operational innovation, Phi brings a unique perspective on how retailers can remain competitive in an increasingly interconnected world.

As supply chains continue to evolve amid shifting consumer demands and global market dynamics, his insights are expected to provide attendees with practical strategies for building agility, resilience, and long-term growth.

Together, Sharma and Phi represent two critical pillars of modern retail success: customer-centric retail leadership and world-class supply chain excellence.

Why NRCE Matters More Than Ever

Retail today extends far beyond products and physical stores.

Success now depends on understanding customers across multiple touchpoints, leveraging data effectively, embracing innovation, strengthening supply chains, adopting new technologies, and creating memorable customer experiences.

The organizations that thrive over the next decade will not necessarily be the largest.

They will be the most adaptable.

NRCE 2026 brings together some of the most influential minds in retail, marketing, leadership, technology, logistics, venture capital, and innovation to help businesses understand and navigate these changes.

Over two days, attendees will gain access to keynote presentations, expert-led discussions, case studies, networking opportunities, and a world-class retail expo showcasing solutions that are transforming the industry.

Leadership Remains the Ultimate Competitive Advantage

Technology may be changing the way businesses operate, but leadership remains one of the most important differentiators in any organization.

This is why NRCE 2026 welcomes Louie Banta, CEO and Chief Training Consultant of Learning Just Made Better, Inc.

Having trained leaders across 24 countries and worked with more than 500 organizations worldwide, Banta brings decades of expertise in leadership development, organizational effectiveness, and people transformation.

His session is expected to provide practical insights on leading through uncertainty, building resilient teams, managing change, and creating cultures that thrive in dynamic environments.

Making Sense of AI for Retail

Few topics are generating as much discussion in business today as artificial intelligence.

Retailers understand that AI is changing the landscape, but many continue to ask the same question:

Where do we start?

NRCE 2026 addresses this challenge through a practical session led by RJ Paculan, Managing Director of TBWA\SMP, and Paolo Broma, Chief Marketing Officer of TBWA\SMP.

Rather than focusing on technical jargon, their discussion will explore practical applications of AI, automation, generative search, customer engagement, content creation, and workflow optimization.

Their message is simple: successful AI adoption starts with understanding business problems first and applying the right technologies to solve them.

The future belongs not to organizations that merely understand AI, but to those that know how to apply it effectively.

Understanding the New Customer

Customer expectations continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace.

Retailers today have access to more data than ever before, yet many still struggle to convert information into meaningful action.

This is where Sunita Howe, Head of Marketing for Southeast Asia and India at Meltwater, brings valuable insight.

Her expertise in media intelligence, customer analytics, and brand growth offers retailers a deeper understanding of how data-driven decision-making can strengthen customer engagement, improve marketing performance, and create sustainable competitive advantages.

Investing in the Next Generation of Retail

Innovation often begins long before a company becomes successful.

It starts with identifying opportunities before they become obvious.

That perspective makes Joan Yao, General Partner at Kickstart Ventures, one of the conference’s most anticipated speakers.

Having invested in transformative companies including Xendit, Pickup Coffee, Kumu, Edamama, and Sprout, Yao brings firsthand experience in identifying emerging trends and helping businesses scale.

Her session will provide valuable insights into innovation, entrepreneurship, startup ecosystems, and the future of Southeast Asian business.

Beyond the Stage: A Complete Retail Innovation Ecosystem

NRCE 2026 extends beyond conference sessions.

The event’s expo floor will feature technology providers, retail solution companies, logistics partners, customer engagement platforms, service providers, and innovators from across the region.

Attendees will have opportunities to:

 • Discover emerging retail technologies
• Explore AI-powered business solutions
• Learn about customer engagement innovations
• Evaluate logistics and fulfillment platforms
• Connect with suppliers and technology partners
• Build strategic business relationships
• Explore new growth opportunities

For many participants, the connections made during NRCE become just as valuable as the insights shared on stage.

Why You Should Attend NRCE 2026

Whether you are a retailer, entrepreneur, startup founder, investor, marketer, technology provider, supply chain executive, or business leader, the issues being discussed at NRCE directly impact your future success.

Artificial intelligence.

Customer experience.

Leadership.

Innovation.

Supply chain transformation.

Data-driven decision-making.

Business growth.

These are no longer future considerations.

They are today’s realities.

The organizations that understand these shifts earliest often gain the greatest competitive advantage.

Be Part of What’s Next

As the Philippine Retailers Association celebrates its 50th year, NRCE 2026 promises to be one of the most significant gatherings in the event’s history.

It is where industry leaders come together to learn, connect, innovate, and prepare for the future.

The future of retail will not be shaped by those who wait for change.

It will be shaped by those who help create it.

More Indonesian Parents Are Introducing Foreign Languages Early—What Does This Mean for Child Development? Jakarta, June 23, 2026 – In an increasingly interconnected world, more parents in Indonesia are beginning to introduce foreign languages to their children from an early age. Beyond being viewed as a valuable communication skill for the future, language learning is increasingly associated with benefits for children’s cognitive development, ranging from memory enhancement to greater cognitive flexibility.

A growing body of research suggests that learning a new language engages multiple brain functions simultaneously, including memory, attention, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to new information. Activities such as recognizing language patterns, understanding context, and regularly recalling vocabulary serve as forms of mental stimulation that help strengthen these cognitive abilities.

According to research cited by Duolingo, learning a language on a regular basis requires the brain to continuously retrieve information, identify patterns, switch between concepts, and adapt to new linguistic rules—activities that function much like a workout for the mind.

Meanwhile, a study conducted by Baycrest and York University found that adults who used Duolingo for approximately 30 minutes a day over a four-month period demonstrated measurable improvements in executive function and cognitive performance. Researchers observed gains in several areas, including working memory, focus, and cognitive flexibility compared with a control group.

“Learning a new language does more than expand a child’s vocabulary—it also helps train how they recognize patterns, connect information, and adapt to different contexts. Across various studies, these abilities have been linked to the development of cognitive flexibility, which serves as an important foundation for learning and problem-solving in everyday life,” said Ayoe Sutomo, Child, Adolescent, and Family Psychologist.

However, Ayoe emphasized that these benefits do not appear overnight. Consistency, regular learning frequency, and enjoyable learning experiences remain important factors in supporting a child’s success in acquiring a new language. She also highlighted the importance of parental guidance when children use digital devices as learning tools.

These findings add to the growing body of evidence surrounding the unique cognitive demands of language learning. Unlike many educational activities that focus primarily on a single skill, language learning simultaneously engages memory, attention, reasoning, and decision-making.

The trend of foreign language learning is also becoming increasingly visible in Indonesia, where parents are combining everyday interactions, formal education, and various digital platforms to introduce languages to their children from an early age.

In line with this trend, language-learning platforms are increasingly being used as complementary tools for learning at home. Globally, Duolingo currently serves more than 133 million monthly active users and over 52 million daily active users worldwide. Through its interactive, game-based approach to learning, the platform helps make language learning more accessible and engaging for learners of all ages.

One example comes from Hudzaifah Giyan G., who was introduced to multiple languages from an early age. According to his father, Gosra Andri Putra, Hudzaifah’s interest in languages developed naturally through a combination of everyday interactions, multilingual exposure, and the use of various learning resources, including digital platforms.

“To answer auntie and uncle’s question: Hudzaifah was introduced to multiple languages from a very young age. Around the age of 2.5–3 years old, he started learning English on his own, and one of the tools he used was Duolingo. In my opinion, it’s safe for kids and also fun, because the app is designed like a game and offers many different languages. Most importantly, as with any gadget or game, it’s still important for parents to supervise their children’s usage” said Gosra.

Beyond academic benefits, multilingualism also provides children with opportunities to engage with different cultures, perspectives, and ways of communicating. As more families seek ways to support their children’s development in an increasingly globalized world, language learning has become more than just a communication skill. For many parents, it represents a long-term investment in nurturing curiosity, adaptability, and a foundation for lifelong learning. With access to more than 40 languages and an interactive learning approach, Duolingo helps support that journey in a flexible and accessible way for learners of all ages.

Filipino Chinese Community Led by FFCCCII Donates P11 Million for GenSan Earthquake Relief and Rehabilitation | MANILA, Philippines — June 19, 2026 — The Filipino Chinese community, led by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) and the Filipino at Tsino Magkaibigan Foundation, has mobilized P11 million in emergency relief and rehabilitation assistance for victims of the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, 2026.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Federation Center in Binondo, Manila, FFCCCII President Victor Lim announced the community’s immediate response to assist thousands of affected families, particularly in General Santos City and neighboring areas.

“The Federation and the entire Filipino Chinese community are deeply saddened by the devastation caused by this tragedy,” Lim said. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods, and sources of income. Nakikiramay po kami.”

Immediately following the earthquake, FFCCCII’s Regional Executive Director for Southern Mindanao and the South Cotabato Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government authorities to assess the extent of the damage and determine urgent community needs.

Initial reports indicate that approximately 2,000 families in General Santos City have been affected, with assessments continuing in other areas.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Lim convened an emergency meeting with leaders of the Filipino at Tsino Magkaibigan Foundation, an umbrella coalition of the 30 largest Filipino Chinese civic, cultural, and business federations spearheaded by FFCCCII.

The coalition immediately approved P6 million for emergency relief operations.

Of this amount, P1 million was immediately released through the South Cotabato Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce to prepare and distribute relief packs to approximately 2,000 affected families.

Each relief package, valued at about P500, contains essential supplies including five kilograms of rice, canned sardines, noodles, instant coffee, and ten liters of drinking water.

In addition to food assistance, the Filipino Chinese community is sending 4,000 galvanized iron roofing sheets to help displaced families repair damaged homes and rebuild their lives.

“Our local chamber will continue to closely monitor developments on the ground and coordinate with government agencies to identify communities that may require additional assistance in the coming weeks,” Lim said.

Beyond immediate relief efforts, FFCCCII has also earmarked an additional P5 million from its Welfare Fund for the possible repair and rehabilitation of damaged public school buildings constructed under its long-running Operation: Barrio Schools program.

The combined emergency and rehabilitation commitment brings the total assistance package to P11 million.

Lim emphasized that helping fellow Filipinos during times of crisis is a longstanding tradition of the Filipino Chinese community.

“For centuries, the Filipino Chinese community has stood side by side with our fellow Filipinos during times of calamity, crisis, and hardship. We believe that helping others is not merely an obligation—it is a moral responsibility and a shared expression of our gratitude to the nation we proudly call home,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to the 30 member organizations of the Filipino at Tsino Magkaibigan Foundation whose generosity and cooperation made the relief efforts possible.

The FFCCCII President called on Filipino Chinese communities nationwide, member chambers, civic organizations, businesses, and private citizens to continue extending assistance to affected communities and support efforts to restore local economies in Mindanao.

“No act of kindness is too small when people are in need,” Lim said. “The road to recovery may be long, but the resilience, courage, faith, and bayanihan spirit of the Filipino people remain stronger than any earthquake.”

The press conference coincided with the traditional Dragon Boat Festival, one of the most important cultural celebrations in Chinese heritage. Lim noted that the festival honors the memory of Qu Yuan, a poet, patriot, and principled statesman whose devotion to public service continues to inspire generations.

“As we commemorate the Dragon Boat Festival—a celebration of patriotism, solidarity, and service to others—may we be reminded that our greatest strength lies in our unity and compassion for one another,” Lim said.

“Sa panahon ng pagsubok, mas lalo tayong dapat magkaisa. Sa panahon ng pagdurusa, mas lalo tayong dapat magmalasakit. At sa panahon ng pagbangon, dapat tayong magtulungan upang walang maiwan.”

About FFCCCII

The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) is the national federation of 170 Filipino Chinese chambers of commerce and diverse trade and industry organizations from Aparri to Tawi-Tawi. It champions business, economic development, and civic advocacies to promote sustainable and inclusive Philippine economic growth and global competitiveness.

Satellite data show barangays affected by ashfall from Mayon | (05 May 2026, Quezon City) The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) produced a map showing areas covered by ash deposits (bounded in red) from the reported pyroclastic density current along the Mi-isi gully of Mayon Volcano on 02 May 2026. The ash deposits (shaded in red) were classified using change detection on a Sentinel-2 satellite image from 04 May 2026 (shown top) compared with a reference image from before the event (28 April 2026). The bottom map overlays the estimated ash deposit extent to show potentially affected barangays. Based on the analysis, at least 8,544 hectares (~85,440 sqkm) were covered by ashfall. For comparison, this area is around half the size of Quezon City.

The amount of information derived from satellite data is oftentimes constrained by cloud cover. For areas obstructed by cloud cover, ash deposition cannot be directly determined. However, the ash deposit extent could be extrapolated by delineating a region around areas classified to have ash deposits. These results are consistent with projections from atmospheric trajectory modeling and reports from the ground. The map is still subject to ground validation.

PhilSA’s support through the analysis of satellite data provides wide-area coverage that assists the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in monitoring the situation and prioritizing areas for response. By making space data accessible to stakeholders, PhilSA enables informed decision-making and strengthens disaster response.

PhilSA will continue monitoring satellite data as the situation requires. Please follow local and national agencies for the latest advisories.

Satellite data shows NO2 concentration in Metro Manila down to pre-fire levels for two consecutive days | (Quezon City) The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has done daily monitoring of satellite data since the Navotas landfill fire reportedly broke out on 10 April 2026. Coinciding with reports on Tuesday (28 April) that significant progress has been made in suppressing the fire, satellite data shows that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration in Metro Manila has fallen below 6 April (pre-fire) levels for two consecutive days. Nitrogen dioxide is a pollutant produced from burning and is a component of smoke, and lower NO2 concentrations indicate a reduction in the volume of smoke emitted from the landfill fire. Observations are consistent with measurements on the ground by EMB NCR and Central Luzon that particulate matter or PM over Metro Manila has improved on Tuesday (28 April) and Wednesday (29 April). PhilSA will continue monitoring of NO2 to assist in quantifying the impact of ground interventions. Please follow local and national health agencies for the latest advisories.

The side-by-side maps compare the estimated smoke extent over Metro Manila at 8:45AM on 27-29 April. Colors indicate the level of concentration of NO2, with darker red colors indicating higher levels of concentration. Data show a reduction in NO2 concentration levels over Metro Manila on 28-29 April, compared to 27 April and previous days. This is also supported by the time-lapse video showing daily snapshots at 8:45AM from 11 April (one day after the fire reportedly broke out) to 29 April (Wednesday).

NO₂ may be produced by multiple sources, including fuel emissions from vehicles and power plants. Please note that NO2 observations were limited to 8:45AM for daily comparison, but NO2 levels generally decrease throughout the day, following a diurnal pattern driven by emission volume and atmospheric processes.

PhilSA has also been monitoring the estimated burnt area extent at the Navotas landfill by analyzing the near infrared band of Sentinel-2C satellite images. Near infrared imagery is commonly used to map burnt areas characterized by charcoal, ash, and reduced vegetation cover. Based on a satellite image captured on Sunday (26 April, 10:16AM), there was an estimated 31.95 hectares (~319,500 sqm) of burnt area (delineated in red). Comparing with the burnt area estimate from 16 April, there was an estimated 0.89 hectares decrease (in green) in burnt area in the southern part of the landfill while an increase of around 3.10 hectares (in red) was detected in the eastern part. Please note that the analysis is based on Sunday (26 April) image and does not reflect the current state in the area. In addition, the analysis detects the extent of burnt areas only and does not identify actively burning areas (ang mga lugar na sunog na, hindi ang mga lugar na nasusunog). A version of this map has been provided to the NDRRMC.

Copperstone Lending, MocaMoca Back SEC Efforts to Strengthen Borrower Protection in Digital Lending

MANILA, Philippines — As the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) moves to tighten oversight of digital lending platforms, industry players are increasingly aligning their operations with emerging regulatory standards focused on transparency, accountability, and consumer protection.

The regulator has recently outlined a shift toward a more preventive approach to supervision, following a rise in consumer complaints across the lending sector. According to statements delivered during the 44th National Credit Congress in Pasay City, the SEC is developing guidelines aimed at strengthening platform-level responsibility and improving borrower safeguards.

SEC Commissioner Javey Paul D. Francisco emphasized the need for stronger governance across digital lending operations.

“Digital lending has the potential to expand access and drive growth, but without strong governance, it can undermine the very trust that sustains the credit system,” Francisco said during the conference.

The Commission has noted that complaints in the sector often involve unregistered platforms, gaps in disclosure, and concerns over collection practices; issues that have prompted calls for clearer regulatory standards and stricter enforcement.

Industry Response: Aligning with Compliance and Transparency

In response to the evolving regulatory environment, some registered lending companies have begun reinforcing internal processes to align with SEC expectations.

Copperstone Lending Inc., a company registered with the SEC, operates the mobile lending platform MocaMoca. The platform applies a digital-first approach that allows users to review loan terms, fees, and repayment schedules before confirmation; an approach that reflects the regulator’s emphasis on improved disclosure practices.

Industry observers note that such measures are increasingly important as the SEC works to distinguish compliant operators from unregistered or unauthorized entities within the online lending space.

Embedding Accountability in Lending Operations

A central theme in the SEC’s proposed direction is the principle that lending companies remain fully accountable for all aspects of their operations, including those handled by third-party service providers.

This includes borrower communication, loan servicing, and collection activities; areas that regulators say must adhere to consistent standards of conduct.

Companies such as Copperstone Lending Inc. are expected to maintain oversight across these functions, ensuring that operational practices remain aligned with regulatory requirements and consumer protection guidelines.

Financial Inclusion and Responsible Lending

The growth of digital lending platforms in the Philippines has been closely linked to efforts to expand financial inclusion. With many Filipinos still lacking access to traditional banking services, mobile lending solutions have provided alternative access to short-term credit.

At the same time, regulators have cautioned that access must be balanced with safeguards to protect borrowers and maintain trust in the financial system.

The SEC’s proposed framework is expected to formalize standards around transparency, data governance, and ethical lending practices, reinforcing the need for responsible operations across the industry.

A More Defined Digital Lending Landscape

As the regulatory framework evolves, the digital lending sector is expected to move toward clearer distinctions between compliant, registered platforms and informal or unauthorized operators.

For borrowers, this may translate into improved access to information and stronger protections. For legitimate providers, it offers an opportunity to reinforce credibility in a more structured and closely monitored market environment.

As discussions from the National Credit Congress suggest, the future of digital lending in the Philippines will likely be shaped not only by technological innovation but also by the strength of governance, transparency, and accountability across the ecosystem.
